New reports suggest that the container shipping sector is on the road to recovery

Container spot rates from Asia to North Europe have increased according to recent reports, causing some carriers to hold off on quoting for May shipments due to anticipated general rate increases.

Spot rates from Asia to Mediterranean ports remained flat, as did spot rates on the Transpacific. However, a number of carrier general rate increases looks set to push spot rates back up on the Transpacific route as volumes pick up and carrier supply management tightens.

A recent HSBC report suggests that the container shipping sector is now witnessing signs of improvement as spot rates may have bottomed out.

Linerlytica has reported that charter rates have risen and capacity utilisation has also increased on the US west coast routes as “market sentiment continues to turn positive”.

With suggestions that the market is picking up, what does this mean for rates?

To explore this topic, we are hosting a webinar “Rates: Are we at rock bottom yet?” on Tuesday 18th April at 2pm (BST) which you can register for here.

  • Container depots in China are turning away new customers due to a slowdown in exports.
    • According to reports, supply is overshooting demand for containers.
    • China’s container depots are working at 90% utilisation, therefore the increasing number of idle containers creates greater congestion at ports.
    • It also makes repositioning empty containers more expensive and inconvenient.

  • The Port of Rotterdam is developing a site for a green hydrogen plant.
    • The site offers space for up to 1 GW of electrolysis and is located next to Tennet’s Amaliahaven high-voltage substation.
    • The Port Authority is exploring the possibility of connecting the Maasvlakte hydrogen plants to regional heat networks and is consulting with the municipality and DCMR on amending the zoning plan.
    • The reason for the site’s development is the tender for the IJmuiden Ver Wind Farm later this year. The wind farm should be ready by 2028 as various parties have already indicated their interest.
    • The party who wins the tender will have 11 hectares on the Maasvlakte exclusively.
