My name is Jimmy Lim, and I am an engineering manager on the Platform Team for Zencargo.

Before joining the Zencargo team, I was a software engineer in FinTech and then moved over to logistics. I started at Zencargo in February as one of the engineers but quickly moved into the management side of things.

Bringing the Shipping Industry Into the Future

In the same way that platform engineering no longer involves rooms full of servers, technology continues to evolve.

Unfortunately, the freight industry isn’t even trying to keep up. Most shipping companies use legacy platforms and outdated systems that cannot sustain continuously expanding global freight needs.

That’s why our work is so important.

Zencargo uses technology in new and exciting ways to disrupt this trillion-dollar broken industry and bring shipping into the future.

We invest a lot of time, energy, and money into solving decades-old problems and creating a positive user experience that customers have never had with shipping before.

Having the Right Tools

Many of the advances we’re making happen because of how we’re adapting technology to our needs.

The systems and practices we’re using, like Kubernetes and GitOps, are already cutting edge. But to help us move forward in our goals for faster, more reliable, and more affordable freight forwarding, we have to take them in new directions.

Having the right people in the right place creates an environment where this can happen. Every engineer and team member has a say in what works, what doesn’t, and how we can grow even more.

We all work together to solve problems and develop better solutions, and ideas are equally valued from bottom to top.

Finally, we’re able to make all of this work because we listen to our customers. We work very hard to find out what they want and need, and then we discover a way to make that happen through new product development or advances in technology.

Because we’ve put so much effort into upgrading and advancing available tech, we have the security and ability to deploy new products and services far faster than other companies. What will take weeks for others might only take hours for us.

The Human Element in a Tech Startup

The first thing that drew me to Zencargo was the people.

We all come from different backgrounds and have different lifestyles, and this company appreciates and respects that. There is a lot of flexibility and accommodation in how we work.

Collaboration is a huge part of what makes us successful, but we also encourage autonomy and self-ownership for individual responsibilities, accomplishments, and growth.

Being such a new company also means that engineers have a unique opportunity to contribute to the foundation and structure of what we’re doing.

Most tech companies are very rigid and set in stone, but we’re still learning and expanding our capabilities and processes. Working here allows every engineer to broaden their knowledge. Generalists come in and find something they’re particularly enthusiastic about, and their role might shift toward a more specialist position.

And while we’re all different, we are all united in our passion for solving the problem of inefficient, wasteful, and expensive shipping. People have the right to receive their goods in a timely and affordable manner, and we’re working to make that happen for as many people as possible.

Platform Engineers Needed

Those may sound like lofty goals, but we’ve already accomplished and grown so much. With the right team, we can only move further forward.

When Zencargo started in 2017, there were just a handful of people. Now we’re a team of close to 300 and growing.

It’s not common for an engineer to work in a company so receptive to knowledge sharing and advancement. However, we encourage everybody to work together and teach each other new things. To be a part of continued growth and progress makes it even more exciting.

If you are interested in logistics, love overcoming new challenges, and have a desire to work with a team of equally driven engineers, you couldn’t ask for a better company to help you build your career.
